WhatsApp is apparently developing a new enhancement for its payment system. As a report by Android Authority, the messaging platform is testing UPI Lite, a feature aimed at enabling faster and more convenient small-scale transactions. This update could position WhatsApp as a stronger competitor to established payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, especially in markets like India, where digital payments exist highly.
A recent teardown of WhatsApp v2.25.5.17 beta revealed code strings referencing UPI Lite, indicating that the platform is actively working on the feature. However, as it remains in the testing phase, there is no confirmed timeline for its official rollout. The code also suggests that UPI Lite payments will be restricted to the primary device and will not be accessible on linked devices.
For those who are unfamiliar, UPI Lite is an extension of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system, widely used in India. Unlike traditional UPI transactions that require real-time authentication and direct bank involvement, UPI Lite enables users to preload a small amount of money into a wallet. This allows for seamless, low-value transactions without the need for repeated authentication.
The purpose of UPI Lite is to streamline small payments, making them quicker and more efficient. For example, when purchasing a cup of coffee from a street vendor or paying for a bus ride, users can complete transactions without multiple authentication steps. Instead, the amount is directly deducted from the UPI Lite wallet, reducing transaction failures, especially during peak hours. According to findings in the beta version, WhatsApp’s UPI Lite feature will also support pin-free payments, similar to how UPI Lite functions on other platforms.
While WhatsApp already offers UPI payments in India, the addition of UPI Lite could enhance its appeal. With over 500 million users in the country, this feature has the potential to benefit a vast audience. However, WhatsApp is not yet listed among the apps that support UPI Lite, unlike competitors such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Samsung Wallet.
Beyond UPI Lite, WhatsApp is also reportedly developing a bill payment feature, which would enable users to pay utility bills, recharge mobile plans, and more, all within the app.
As of now, there is no official timeline for the rollout of these features to all users.
