Google is phasing out another product: Chromecast is officially discontinued. The company is moving away from its Chromecast dongles and adopting a new set-top box design. According to 9To5Google, the new device is a sleek, white box with two connected wires at the back, featuring a slanted roof that aligns with the design of Google’s recent hardware. The image also reveals a white remote, similar to the recent Chromecast model, with a round dial for navigation and a shortcut button below it. While Google has not officially confirmed this, the device is expected to be named the “Google TV Streamer.”
For those unfamiliar Google Chromecast is a streaming device connecting to a TV's HDMI port, enabling users to stream content from their smartphones, tablets, or computers to their TVs directly. By connecting to the same Wi-Fi network, users can cast videos, music, and other media from apps such as YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify.
Transform Your TVs
Chromecast offers an easy and cost-effective way to transform a standard TV into a smart TV, allowing seamless streaming and sharing of digital content on a larger screen. It also supports voice commands when paired with Google Assistant, enhancing its convenience and functionality.
The current Google Chromecast supports 4K resolution for high-quality streaming with an efficient Amlogic S905X5 processor and 2 GB of RAM. It provides 8 GB of internal storage for apps and system functions. The Chromecast remote has recently been redesigned with a pill-shaped form, featuring a D-pad, additional buttons, and a new customizable "magic" button, with the volume rocker now located on the front. Running on Android TV 14, it introduces new features such as Fast Pair, an improved audio output switcher, and updated home screen options.
Efficient Video Streaming
The processor also supports the AV1 codec for more efficient video streaming and offers enhanced compatibility with devices like the Pixel Tablet and platforms such as TikTok. With the Google TV Streamer, Google is expected to increase its offerings further, but it will be intriguing to see how it achieves this while maintaining a similar price point to the current Chromecast, which is priced under Rs 10,000 in India.
The anticipated Google TV Streamer is set to be unveiled at the Pixel event on August 13, where Google is also expected to introduce its flagship Pixel devices. The lineup is anticipated to include the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
The event is also likely to feature the launch of the new Pixel Watch 3 and Google Buds Pro 2. According to the teasers, significant AI announcements are also anticipated. This will be the first time Google has introduced the Pixel Fold to the Indian market.
